Marine Society is delighted to have been awarded a further £50,ooo by ITF Seafarers Trust to fund the Coming Ashore programme as it enters its third year. This was in no small part thanks to letters of endorsement from Maritime London and Nautilus International. Marine Society director Darrell Bate said: “This funding is vital to ensure we can continue to support our seafarers as they progress their careers ashore and to retain their valuable skills within the sector. We are grateful for the support of member bodies that make this possible”.
The programme now has over 60 mentees at various stages of transitioning to shoreside roles, with 14 having secured jobs in Maritime to date. Coming Ashore benefits from a bank of industry mentors, including Maritime London members, who provide their time and expertise on a voluntary basis. Moving forward, it is hoped to secure high quality work placements in maritime services that have been impractical hitherto due to Covid-19 restrictions. In this regard, any company that is able to offer such an opportunity is invited to get in touch with the programme manager, Carla Rockson at crockson@ms-sc.org.
Marine Society aims for Coming Ashore to become sustainable by the end of 2022 through employer sponsorship and contributions in kind, so that the programme remains free and accessible to UK and international seafarers. For further information visit www.marine-society.org/coming-ashore
