Mersey Maritime event celebrates ‘The Glorious Twelfth’

Posted on: 10 August 2015

It isn’t every day you receive an invitation to a drinks reception based on a theme more commonly the preserve of the hunting /shooting /fishing community.

This week (12 August) saw members and key partners of Mersey Maritime gather together at Café 4748 on Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, for a summer drinks reception based on ‘The Glorious Twelfth’, the date that marks the official opening of the grouse shooting season. Entertainment included a simulated clay pigeon shooting game and the drinking of toasts with shots of The Black Grouse, a special edition whisky based on peated Islay malts, from the makers of The Famous Grouse.

Chris Shirling-Rooke, Mersey Maritime’s Acting CEO, said: “The maritime sector on Merseyside is booming, with 20,000 new jobs predicted by 2020 and major infrastructure projects taking place across the region. As the representative body for the maritime industry in this region we’re feeling a very real energy in the sector.

“Businesses that Mersey Maritime helped support during the recent recession years are now prospering, with widespread investment and new jobs created.” he added. “While most of Mersey Maritime’s work is about linking companies and strategic agendas to facilitate business growth, the idea of staging our own version of ‘The Glorious Twelfth’ as a social event seemed like a fun thing to do.”

Chris Wainwright, Managing Director of Beech Group, the Bromborough based demolition and remediation company which sponsored the event, said: “The opportunity to meet key businesses in a relaxed setting can be a great way to build business relationships and strengthen local supply chains.  We are delighted with how the evening went and see our relationship with Mersey Maritime as an important part of our growth plans.”  He added: “The team at Café 4748 did a fantastic job and the venue was perfect, a real hidden gem.”
