Reed Smith and Maritime London joined forces and delivered a successful event on March 20th, entitled ‘CII – what’s the impact on the shipping industry?’ and featuring a panel of leading industry professionals, who discussed the new Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) measures introduced under MARPOL. The event was hosted at Reed Smith’s rooftop venue and concluded with a networking reception.
Reed Smith Partner Nick Austin set the scene with a presentation outlining the CII measures, after which he and fellow panellists Yannis Calogeras, UK & Ireland Marine Chief Executive at Bureau Veritas, Steve Davies, Chief Executive Officer of Anglo International Shipping, Ann Shazell, Global Lead Lawyer, Ocean Transportation at Cargill had a lively and interesting discussion which sparked some difficult questions from the audience about CII and its implementation. The panel was expertly moderated by Jos Standerwick, Chief Executive of Maritime London.
Nick Austin commented: “Reed Smith was delighted to host this expert-led discussion on the new CII regulations with Maritime London. It was refreshing and illuminating to hear from senior industry voices representing owners, charterers and class on the significant impact of CII on the shipping industry following its roll-out in January 2023. Given that compliance with the regulations cuts across the traditional division of legal responsibility between owners and charterers under a time charter, the impact of CII on vessel marketability and asset values remains unknown, as do the potential unintended consequences. Both will be keenly watched. The panel’s discussion was made all the more interesting by some insightful contributions from the floor and by Jos Standerwick’s able moderation”.
