DP World London Gateway and UPS announced plans to build a new 32,000 square metre package sorting and delivery facility at the logistics site in the south east of England. At close to £120 Million, the project is one of UPS’s largest infrastructure investments outside of the United States of America.
HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World, said: “We congratulate UPS on this strategic development. By using DP World London Gateway Park and Port, UPS will have a fast ‘global conveyor-belt’ directly connected to their own worldwide network. UPS’s hub will also provide distribution solutions to other logistics park occupiers. This combination of world class services will be a unique offering for the UK and Europe.”
“This construction reaffirms UPS’s commitment to the UK and our confidence in its economy,” said Luis Arriaga, UPS’s Managing Director for UK, Ireland & Nordics. “It is part of our nearly US $2 billion in infrastructure investments across Europe over the next five years. Through these investments, we will continue to do what UPS does best, which is to reliably and efficiently connect our customers of all sizes to destinations all over the world.”
The facility, expected to be completed in the summer of 2017, will act as a UK hub and distribution centre for the local area as well as a key gateway to UPS’s global transportation network. Once completed, it will be able to process approximately 30,000 packages per hour, with room for further expansion.
Opened Q4 2013, DP World London Gateway is the UK’s newest, major deep-sea container port adjacent to Europe’s largest logistics park. Owned and operated by DP World and situated on the north bank of the River Thames, London Gateway provides unrivalled deep-sea shipping access to the largest consumer markets in the UK.
The port’s location, with its superior operational systems and service, ensure ships load and unload as fast as possible, making London Gateway a world class asset for the UK.
In a separate announcement DP World Limited said it had agreed with Associated British Ports (ABP) to extend the license agreement for DP World Southampton for a further 25 years until 2047.
It was also announced that DP World had acquired the remaining 49% stake in DP World Southampton from ABP, making DP World the sole owner of the business.
HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World, said: “We are delighted to announce the 25 year extension of the license agreement for DP World Southampton, which is one of the most efficient terminals in the UK and the only deep-sea container terminal on the south coast of England. Also, through full ownership of DP World Southampton, we will now be able to combine with DP World London Gateway, the newest deep-sea container terminal and logistics park at the heart of the UK’s biggest consumer markets, to offer our customers the best possible service and long term growth in the UK. A unique and very exciting proposition.”
