Gard has announced it is now a signatory to the UN Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), a global framework for the insurance industry to address environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities. Launched at the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, its goal is a risk aware world, where insurers play a key role in enabling healthy, safe, and sustainable societies.
‘As a leading marine insurer, we work every day to improve the safety and well-being of seafarers and to prevent and limit the consequences of marine pollution. Sustainability is at the very core of what we do and how we want to operate. That is why we are proud to be signatories to the UN Principles for Sustainable Insurance. We need global initiatives like this to achieve the changes and progress the world demands. Together with our Members, clients, and other key stakeholders, we are committed to playing our part. Change happens together,’ said Gard CEO, Rolf Thore Roppestad.
Programme Leader of the PSI, Butch Bacani, warmly welcomes Gard to the table: ‘Signing the UN’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) is the first port of call for insurers in their voyage to embedding sustainability in their risk management, insurance and investment activities,’ said Bacani, who leads the PSI at the UN Environment Programme. ‘With Gard joining the PSI, the world’s largest marine insurer is making it clear that seaworthiness, insurability and sustainability go hand-in-hand—that they have a key role in helping society navigate towards a sustainable future.’
