London Maritime Arbitration Association (LMAA) has held its first seminar in Singapore last month, as part of its ongoing programme of overseas seminars.
Users of London arbitration now extend far beyond the City of London and the reach of the various LMAA terms are global. As such, the LMAA is keen to share its experience and insights into how most effectively to utilise its terms with its international users.
The event took the form of an afternoon seminar held at the Fullerton Hotel in the commercial business district of Singapore. Interest in the event far exceeded originally anticipated audience numbers, such that the event needed to move from The Straits Room to The Ballroom in order to accommodate over 170 delegates who registered for the event.
Nicholas Woo, partner at Birketts solicitors, chaired the first session comprising an introductory presentation from the Honorary Secretary, Daniella Horton and the papers of the President, Clive Aston and former Honorary Secretary and committee member, Ian Gaunt on the topics of commencement of arbitration and jurisdiction and preliminary issues respectively.
The second session was chaired by committee member, Ian Green and comprised papers on costs and on rights of appeal presented by committee member, David Martin-Clark and 20 Essex Street barrister presently based in Singapore, Simon Milnes respectively.
The two sessions were followed by a panel discussion involving Mark Sachs, partner at Thomas Cooper Singapore, Robert Joiner, partner at Wikborg Rein, Kelly Yap, partner at Oon & Bazul and Peter Doraisamy, director at Selvam LLC, which concluded the afternoon programme. The seminar was then followed in the evening by a reception at Eden Hall, the residence of the British High Commissioner to Singapore.
