The Lord Mayor, accompanied by a business delegation, visited Busan over the last two days. On arrival, he saw Shell’s new Prelude FLNG being built at Samsung Heavy Industry in Goeje Island. Highly appropriate considering his background as gas shipbroker.
The next day, he was given an Honorary Doctorate by Korea Maritime and Ocean University, the Korean national university specializing in the maritime and ocean sectors and numbering IMO Secretary General Lim Ki-tack amongst its alumni.
This was followed by a Busan-London CEO Business Forum at BIFC attended by nearly 50 delegates from London and Busan. They considered a range of topics including the restructuring of Korean shipping and shipbuilding industries, areas for business cooperation post-Brexit (particularly in shipbuilding), maritime and financial services industries and incentives for UK companies in Busan. This was the commencement of a planned ongoing dialogue with Busan and Maritime London.
At the conclusion of the Forum, the Lord Mayor offered a Mansion House Scholarship in 2017 to a Korean student graduating from a UK university.
