Mersey Maritime, together with key partners Peel and Liverpool John Moores University, made a major announcement at the ‘Mersey–on-the-Thames’ event, organised by Merseay Maritime as part of the International London Shipping Week 2015 on September 9th. It has been revealed that the disused Grade II-listed Victorian tower in Wirral’s docklands is to be transformed into a £30m advanced manufacturing and engineering skills centre.
The centre will provide the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to support the Northern Powerhouse agenda as well as new and niche activities that can bring together business and academia to bridge that gap, providing local firms and wider industry with the skilled staff they need to grow and compete.
The atmosphere for the evening was very much be celebratory, acknowledging our city’s proud maritime history, the 300 year anniversary since the opening of the world’s first 24 hour wet dock in Liverpool, the 175th anniversary of Cunard Line in the city and the opening in late 2015 of Liverpool2, Peel’s new £300m deep water container terminal.
