Maritime London held its Annual Dinner at the Royal Automobile Club, its preferred venue since 2019, on November 30th. The dinner, supported by NYMAR (New York Maritime Inc), drew a capacity attendance of more than 210 Maritime London members and their clients.
Harry Theochari, Chair of Maritime London, welcomed the guests and introduced the dinner speaker, Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Spinnaker Chairman Phil Parry, a director of Maritime London and trustee of the Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship, spoke passionately about the charity and the work it has done over the past 30 years, with the dinner guests generously donating over £2,500 as a result during the evening, both in cash and via MLOCS JustGiving page. Prior to the dinner, a seminar for guests was held entitled ‘What does an increasingly polarised world mean for shipping?’. This was also live-streamed via Zoom to NYMAR members thanks to kind technical support by Maritime London member Quadrant Chambers.
Opening remarks at the seminar were delivered by NYMAR Chairman Clay Maitland, who worked at International Registries, Inc. for over 41 years and is now a managing partner and owner of the company which administers the Marshall Islands Ship Registry.
The seminar discussion was moderated by Michael Parker, Chairman – Global Shipping, Logistics & Offshore at Citi. Panellists included Harry Theochari OBE, Chair of Maritime London; Sophia Brown, General Manager, New York Office, IRI/The Marshall Islands Registry; and Richard Meade, Editor, Lloyd’s List, as well as Clay Maitland.
The panel discussed the current geopolitical risk environment and how shipping stakeholders can work more closely to develop shared understanding. The conversation also focused heavily on the ESG agenda, and shipping’s decarbonisation in particular.
