Shipping has reached an ESG tipping point

findings from Spinnaker’s annual Maritime People & Culture Conference

Posted on: 1 June 2022

Spinnaker, the maritime people experts, hosted its annual Maritime People & Culture Conference on the 26th and 27th May 2022 in London. The event welcomed leading maritime futurist K D Adamson as a keynote speaker and featured fascinating talks, presentations and panel discussions covering the key issues facing the industry and how maritime HR and leadership teams can address them.

Speakers included Spinnaker’s Chairman Phil Parry, Managing Director, CEO of Lookout Maritime Martin Crawford-Brunt, Clyde & Co Employment Law Partner Heidi Watson, Chief HR Officer at the American Bureau of Shipping Chuck Kemper, Baltic Exchange CEO Mark Jackson and many more including HRDs and heads of crewing from shipowners and ship managers.

Some quotes from the event included:

K D Adamson, Futurist and CEO at Ulterior Futures: “You can’t solve cultural problems by introducing new technology.”

Lucie-Marie Gauthier, VP of Global Talent at Fednav Ltd: “It’s a tough world for recruiting and retaining. Turnover has increased as staff rethink their lives. We need to attract young people to maritime. ESG issues present an opportunity to make a change.”

Sharron Pamplin, Chief People Officer at Lloyd’s Register: “Culture has a very simple definition. It is the way we do things. If we get our culture right, it can set us up for real success in transformation.”

Teresa Peacock, Managing Director, Executive Search at Spinnaker: “Retention is often linked to the fact that often people leave managers not organisations.”

Phil Parry, chairman and co-founder at Spinnaker: “The shipping job market has vastly changed. Employers face a smaller pool of candidates and has reached an ESG tipping point.”

Attendees shared feedback such as, “Really insightful discussions, informal and relaxed feel” and “Compelling conversations on the ESG agenda.”
