The Board of UK P&I Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Lee Wai Pong, who is joining the UK P&I Club in Singapore as a Regional Advisor.
Wai Pong is a qualified Master Mariner, a retired Commanding Officer (Reservist) from the Republic of Singapore Navy, and accredited Associate Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Most recently, Wai Pong was the Executive Director of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA).
During his seafaring career, Mr Lee sailed on a wide range of ships. Prior to joining SCMA, he worked for a prominent international ship-owner based in Singapore and headed up the commercial management of its handy sized fleet of dry bulk carriers.
Hugo Wynn-Williams, Chairman of Thomas Miller and Chief Executive of UK P&I Club, says: “I am very pleased to welcome Lee Wai Pong to the UK P&I Club. He has a wealth of experience and expertise in the shipping industry and his appointment demonstrates our commitment to strengthening relationships between the Club and the shipping community in Singapore.”
Lee Wai Pong adds: “Thomas Miller’s ability to provide maritime insurance knowledge and response locally in Asia is unmatched. In particular, I believe the claims team is the strongest in the region with skills and experience gained at sea, in commerce and in the law. I am looking forward to helping Thomas Miller continue to deliver the sophisticated skills and expertise that keep Members’ ships trading safely, regardless of whether they are locally based or trading into the region.”
Singapore is one of four Thomas Miller office locations in Asia which provide services to Asian Members and handle claims that occur in Asian waters.
The four Asian offices are overseen by Andrew Jones as Regional Director, who comments: “I am very pleased that Mr Lee is joining our Singapore office. We are very conscious of the need to provide first rate services and support to Members of the UK P&I Club and UK Defence Club, particularly in these extremely difficult times for shipping. Mr Lee’s appointment is reinforcing the Club’s ties with the Singapore shipping community and is a reflection of the increasing importance of Singapore as a maritime hub.
